Mu’awiyah sent many gifts of jewelry, perfume, and dishes made Of gold and silver to ‘Ubaidullah bin ‘ Abbas, and he sent them with his guard. When the guard delivered the gifts, he continued to stare at them for a long time before leaving,
‘Ubaidullah asked, “Is there anything you desire from this?”
He said, “Yes, by Allah, there mingles in my soul a desire for these things which was in the soul of Ya’qub for Yusuf!”
‘Ubaidullah laughed and said, “Then all of this is yours!”
The guard said, “l fear that this news will reach Mu’awiyah, and then he will be angry.’
‘Ubaidullah said, “Stamp it with your own seal, then give it to the treasurer, and he will bring it to you in the night.”
The guard said, “By Allah, indeed this is a trick befitting of the generous ones; in fact, it even surpasses exceptional levels of generosity. I hope not to die until I See you in his place (i.e., in the place Of the ruler).”
‘Ubaidullah thought that he was being trapped, and he said, “Leave such speech; I am from a people who fulfill their promises and who do not go contrary to their agreements.”
